The history of Sexual Assault Awareness Month stems from the early 1970’s when survivors of sexual violence came together and began to speak out against the atrocities they suffered. They held rallies and public speak-outs, and as a result created a movement to end sexual violence.
SAAM is an annual designation observed in April. The aim of this month is to raise awareness about sexual violence around the world, and to educate communities on how to prevent it.
The theme of SAAM for 2023 is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity”
This movement is so important to many, it provides an opportunity for people to come together, ask questions, and talk honestly about what sexual violence means to them, as well as share their experience.
Show your support for survivors of sexual harassment and abuse by wearing TEAL – the colour of sexual violence prevention – on the 4th of April. Post a selfie to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and any other social media platform using #SAAM2023.
By wearing teal, you are signalling that you support survivors and are safe to talk to if they need to reach out.
